For housing societies

Start waste segregation in your society

A two-week plan for a residents’ committee: agree, prepare the staff, give every home two bins, launch, and keep it going.

About 2 hours

What you need

  • Two bins or bags per home (green for wet, blue for dry), or stickers for bins people already have
  • A poster for the notice board and lift
  • A sign-up sheet for volunteers

Step by step

Week 1: get ready

  1. Agree in a committee meeting, and pick two or three volunteers to lead.
  2. Talk to the housekeeping staff and the waste collector: how will wet and dry waste be collected and taken away separately?
  3. Check your municipality’s rules and collection days for dry waste.
  4. Get the bins or stickers ready, and put up the poster.

Week 2: launch

  1. Send a short message in the society group: what goes in which bin, and from which day.
  2. On launch day, volunteers stand at the collection point to help and thank people.
  3. For the first two weeks, check the bins every day and kindly remind homes that mix waste.

Keep it going

Share a simple number every month (for example, kg of dry waste sent for recycling) and thank the staff publicly.
