Adopt a tree

Each group adopts a tree on or near the campus, gives it a name and a “passport”, and looks after it through the year.

Ages 8–14About 30 minutes

What you need

  • A measuring tape
  • One notebook per group (the tree passport)
  • A watering can or bucket
  • Pencils and crayons

Step by step

The first day

  1. Walk around the campus and let each group choose a young tree (or plant a native sapling in the monsoon).
  2. Give the tree a name and start its passport: kind of tree, where it stands, its height and the thickness of its trunk.
  3. Draw the tree, its leaves and anything living on it: birds, ants, caterpillars.

Every week

Make a rota for watering in the dry months, and note what has changed: new leaves, flowers, visitors.

Every month

Measure the tree again and add it to a growth chart. At the end of the year, each group presents its tree to the class.
